PRE-CONFERENCE TRAININGS
Pre-conference training is a great way to enhance your learning at the 2008 National Conference on Volunteering and Service. This year’s conference features audience and issue specific content designed to provide attendees with access to expert know-how, tips, and tricks from a cadre of instructors well versed in their specific areas. These focused training sessions will be held onsite at the conference hotels. Space is limited in these sessions, so please register early to guarantee your seat.

AmeriCorps Alums Pre-Conference
AmeriCorps Alums Chapter Leaders will join together for 2 days of alumni-designed discussions and workshops. We’ll share best practices, creative ideas, and practical steps to strengthen the nationwide network of AmeriCorps Alums chapters. An alumni networking reception and service project will add to the momentum and spirit of service

Advanced Institute on Volunteer Management
Take your skills to a new level with this in-depth advanced Institute that is the first part of a conference-within-a-conference. Learn from international experts on leading-edge topics in volunteer management in a series of interactive sessions that allow you to apply learning to your own program. The institute is designed for those with at least 3 years of volunteer management experience.

Orientation and Training for Peer Mentors (Invitation Only)
For FGP RSVP and SCP directors who have been selected to serve as Peer Mentors to new Senior Corps directors. This training will focus on adult learning techniques; best-practice mentoring strategies; an overview of Mentor expectations duties and administrative requirements; and common programmatic issues. There will also be an opportunity to meet and speak with the assigned new project directors to be mentored. A box lunch will be provided.

AmeriCorps Communicators Institute
Media and marketing are powerful techniques to help your AmeriCorps program mobilize members, volunteers, partners, funding, and support. Working with issue experts and peers, you'll learn how to hone your media skills, liven up your website, tell your story, show your impact, and boost your brand. You'll also help build a unified network of communicators to help make AmeriCorps a household name.

Beyond Response: The Forgotten Phases of Disaster
With so much attention being given disaster response efforts following a major incident it's easy to forget that those efforts are just part of an on-going year-round cycle of activities. These sessions will focus on those "forgotten" phases of disaster (preparedness recover and mitigation) which are equally as essential to a community's disaster resilience. Attendees will discover unique and creative ways to participate in these activities in their own communities.

Making it Happen: Effective Disability Inclusion from Great Ideas to Successful Implementation
Disability Coordinators or Managers in national service grantee organizations will explore the core functions of the position and share the most effective ways they have found to approach and successfully implement the work. Participants will strengthen skills and enhance their efficacy vis-à-vis the new disability inclusion standard.

Baby Boomer Training
Are you wondering how to utilize the skills that boomers bring from their experiences? Come learn how organizations throughout the country have embraced boomer volunteers and how your program or community might benefit. You will learn about the various ways that boomers are creating capacity and becoming engaged in roles that fulfill their desires. You will also learn how you might benefit from new and varied partnerships in your community that are attractive to boomer volunteers. This session is for programs that are interested in expanding their volunteer roles to create a wider range of activities to respond to unfulfilled needs.

Annual Affiliate Leadership Training
Some of the central elements and service offerings of Points of Light & Hands On Network affiliate organizations include engaging volunteer leaders, designing effective volunteer projects and managing group based volunteer experiences. Participating in this session will enhance your capacity to deliver quality volunteer services as a Points of Light & Hands On Affiliate. Session continues on Sunday June 1 st and includes lunch. How to be Politically Savvy – Making the Most of your Government Position
As Volunteer Resource Managers in a government environment we need to learn how to deal with the politics. You may think your only concern is the volunteers people who want to give their time and talent to our communities. In reality you have to learn how to play the game to be truly successful in your position. Hear first-hand from someone who has been a Volunteer Resource Manager and worked her way to the top as an Assistant County Administrator about the importance of "Political Savvy." Learn survival techniques the importance of demographics and strengthening effective leadership skills.

Youth voice and leadership...service with and by youth... What does it look like? How does it happen? Why do it? Come to this session to hear the story of one program that engages youth as learners and leaders through service and challenge yourself to move your program along the continuum from community service to community service-learning.

Who's in your network? Social Networking as a Strategy for Engaging Students and Others in Volunteering
Do you draw a blank when someone starts talking about Face Book My Space Web 2.0 or virtual communities? Come to this session to bring yourself and your program into the world of social networking a strategy for reaching out to and connecting students and volunteers. Hear how other programs capitalize on this rapidly expanding world.

America's Service Commissions Youth Leadership Development Institute
In its great tradition of developing the leadership skills and supporting the roles of youth commissioners America's Service Commissions (ASC) is presenting the Youth Commissioner Leadership Development Institute. This interactive and highly energized workshop will give youth commissioners the scoop on what it means to be a youth commissioner their roles on the state service commissions and how they can engage their communities in service both locally and nationally. The workshop will be presented by youth for youth. This workshop is only open to youth commissioners.

Native American Profiles- Your Neighbors and Partners
This session will provide an overview of geography-based research comparing locations of current Senior Corps Programs with elder Native American populations. It will also provide strategies for effective cross-cultural partnering between elder programs.

American Idealist: The Story of Sargent Shriver
American Idealist* brings Shriver's lifelong commitment to service to life. A powerful depiction of practical activism this documentary offers a hopeful vision of what this nation could be and could do based on the experience of what it once did when pushed by the civil rights movement and guided by the War on Poverty. In the wake of 9/11 domestic inequality and surging global tensions Shriver's story of accomplishment and message of positive patriotism through service has much to offer to today's idealistic young Americans and the adults who would like to see more of them. This is a story that today's young Americans need to know.
